So, what's an icon like you doing in a place like this?

It's a question that one who is acquainted with Citterio's now legendary body of work, but not his philosophies, might ask him. No salt to Miami - I live a stone's throw from the Magic City and wouldn't have it any other way - but when I consider Citterio's international portfolio of hotel projects for BVLGARI, and mighty creative contributions to the industrial design sector with such extraordinary brands as B&B Italia, Flexform, Flos, and Vitra - he just doesn't strike me as a shorts and flip-flops kinda guy.

Antonio Citterio, who turned 70 this year, and partner and fellow architect Patricia Viel, the driving force of Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel, which in 2020 celebrates its twentieth year in business.

And yet, Arte, the 12-story, 16-unit oceanfront building is positioned in a quaint beach town that's small on population but big on character. As a South Floridian, I'm ecstatic, but as a design journalist, I can't help but wonder why.

Well, it's simple to connect the dots when you consider Citterio's perspective on the very architecture that brought him notoriety. He's not about building monuments, but rather, creating elegant and lasting structures that have meaning within the context of where they stand.

So give him Surfside, an oceanfront community that rejects the hustle of Miami Beach in lieu of preserving its 1930s heritage and small-town feel, and in return he will give you an understated version of his distinct European sensibilities, combined with the contemporary edge that put his work into every significant design museum on the planet. And it will be absolutely perfect... and right where it belongs.

The stunning result of a star-powered collaboration between Citterio and Kobi Karp Architecture, Interior Design and Planning, Arte’s exterior is clad in a luxe Roman travertine and articulated by a series of wraparound terraces and expansive windows.

The array of first-class amenities includes a 75’ indoor swimming pool, an outdoor swimming pool and beachfront meditation pond, a rooftop tennis court, state-of-the-art fitness center and yoga studio, sauna and steam room and dedicated pet runway and relief corridor. The property also features lush grounds designed by leading landscape architect Enzo Enea.

The $11.6M, 4,302-square-foot, three-bedroom model residence below was designed with high-quality finishes including Roman travertine, bronze, Cenere oak and honed Byron marble, all hand-selected by Citterio, and decorated in accordance with the architect's vision by Wade Hallock, principal of Hallock Design, who is noted for his elite clientele that includes Pink, Matthew McConaughey and repeat members of the Forbes 400 list.
